My heart is with Pittsburgh, my old Kentucky home, and all those who have known one. One is too many.

I long for a Sabbath

when my body will know rest -

the pause after creation,

the stillness before

once more.

Once more

to steal another sunrise

just to admire the other six.

What I’d give

to behold.

What I’d give.

What I’d give.

I hear the pulse outside

beat like any other day,

the nigun of the street below

giving phantom sensations

of family members not present.

Taking my palms for solace,

our bodies form

an unbreakable circle.

I hear the pulse inside

beat like any other day,

the same deep breath I once inhaled

giving phantom sensations

of more air than is present.

Lungs scraped with old salt,

my body reflects

a breakable cycle.

I long for a Sabbath

when my body will know rest.

But I’ve know ten.

I’ve known many.

I’ve known one.

I’ve known one.
